I received this interesting email (Below) from Wesley Johnston referencing his 1994 trip to Europe and a copy of the soundex (similar sounding name) Census of 1880 (U.S.).

One comment he made that really interested me was about Butsons looking alike. I, too have observed that feature of most all Butsons I've ever met.....especially the Canadian Butsons....they seem to have an English/Irish look of pointed or sharp features, a lot of blue eyes, freckles, large teeth, large smiles, thick hair (dark, mostly), fair to olive skin, and prominent noses. Seems like when you look at old photos of any Butson surname family members, especially in groups...you feel you recognize them....even though you may never have met. I know descendants are suppose to have similarities, shared traits, etc., but Butsons seem to carry more alikeness down through the ages than the norm. Or am I just full of it?

Also, in this note, the similar sounding names (e.g. Butzen, Bodson, Budson, Butzon, Butzin, etc.) that are listed, brings to mind that a lot of our ancestors could have originated in Central Europe (Germany, France, Belgium or Holland)....prior to the English/Irish lines. Has anyone done any research on our "Continental" namesakes?

Additionally, I am having difficulty surfacing Australian and New Zealand connections to the Butsons of St Blazey, Cornwall England... Any research out there, shared with us here, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to Wesley Johnston for sharing with us.

Until next time,

Warm regards,

David

"Hello David,

Here are all the Butsons (or others with the same Soundex code) in the 1880 US Census. The Belgian ones in PA are interesting to me. When I went to Belgium for the 50th anniversary of the Bulge in Dec 1994, I found that not far west of Stavelot was a country restaurant called Ferme Bodson (Bodson Farm), which really was a farm. I stopped to see them, and that old woman looked very much to me like a Butson, at least the ones in Canada. I wrote to a woman in France whose name they gave me, but we were not able to link up.

These are sorted by Age (descending) within Surname within State."

I have looked through a lot of the posted info in many web sites with the Butson name. Not once have I seen mention of the Butsons that are mainly in the San Diego area. Harry Butson, born 1908 sired 10 children, 6 boys and 4 girls. His father Harry, I have little info about. Anyway, the 10 kids had a lot of their own kids, and there are a number of kids from all those cousins. Many have the Butson surname. We live mainly in Southern Calif, though one is in Oklahoma and one in Northern California. Perhaps some information can be gained by contacting some of these rarely mentioned Butsons...as far as I'm concerned we are a cornerstone of the world Butson population. Hope this helps.

Hi Michael: Its good to hear from you. On the thread just previous to your post, (1880 Census), the first seven names are California Butsons. But I don't see a Harry. If you could provide a bit more info, such as full name of Harry, his father, grandfather and any birthdates or children's names, or spouses of any Butsons, I would be happy to do research on the Harry Butson family descendant tree and post it here on this site.

As you have said, I too have found that the Butson name is much more prevalent than previously believed but little data on the Southern U.S. or West Coast Butsons is published. The probable reason you see so much info on the Butsons of Canada and Northern U.S. and Australia, New Zealand is that most, not all, 17/18th century imigrants of England, Ireland and Scotland tended to be to British Commonwealth countries because of affiliation and citizen/passport status. Then, emigration from those countries and especially in North America continued to non-Commonwealth countries.

Hence there was a migration of the Butson name to Northern U.S. States, mostly from Ontario, Canada and then throughout the States.

Some British Butsons did emigrate directly to the U.S., however, and we even find some Butsons who fought in the American Revolutionary War and some who fought in the American Civil War. Direct imigration to the west coast of the U.S. was very rare but more likely to have occurred when the general population of the Eastern U.S. moved west.

I hope you will return and participate in helping to fill in the blanks on the West Coast Butsons.

Regards,

Dave

Comments I have been searching for Butson's in other parts of the world that descended from around the Cubert/ Crantock/ St Agnes area of Cornwall. I have not been able to trace any descendents from these lines so far. Some of the families that the females married into are Stephens and Tregea. I have been told that some of these went to America in about the 1800's or so. My mother was Mary Elizabeth Butson born in NZ, her father was Richard Butson & mother Henrietta Townsend. Grandparents were William Butson & Mary Chegwidden, GtGrandparents were Solomon Butson & Elizabeth Mitchell, GtGtGrandparents were Solomon Butson & Jane Chenoweth. I would like to trace the families of the siblings of her Gt Grandparents & Gt GT Grandparents. It would be great to find relatives of these lines where ever they are in the world.

Jocelyn: In answer to your query, I looked up the Chegwidden line and found references to the Stephens line but also to variations on the Chegwidden name e.g. Cheqwine, Chigwyn, and CHEGWYEN. Maybe you will be able to follow one of these variations with more success on the Chegwidden side.

The results of my lookup are below.

David

Hi I'm Warren Butson 35 and married. Just was wondering if anyone knows which country contains the most Butsons (that we know of). I'm guessing USA but I could be wrong. I'm from Surrey England and I live in a town called Sutton (near Wimbledon.) My wider family (cousins and uncles) all live relatively close (5-20 miles) to us although we're hopeless at getting together. I wonder which Butson family live closest to us beyond my direct blood family?

I recently received this interesting email from Christy Cunniffe on Bishop Christopher Butson in East Galway 1817 - . Does anyone have additional info that may help her build the family profile? Also, does anyone have a drawing of the Butson Coat of Arms that we may compare to Christy's plate?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave

Dave, the Butson family once lived at St Brendans, the Glebe House in Clonfert, in East Galway from 1817 until the 1930s. The first of the Butson's to come to Clonfert was Christopher Butson, he was the Protestant Bishop of Clonfert and later Killaloe. His Wife and grandson are buried in Clonfert Cathedral. He was the last Protestant Bishop to actually live in the old Bishops Palace in Clonfert. I have been trying to put together some form of family profile for them but with litle sucess although i have amassed an amount of material. Christopher Butson retired as Bishop and died and is buried in Bath England. I will send you an attachment later that has some other material. I also have a plate that i think bears the butson coat of Arms, you may be able to verify this for me. Yours Sincerely Christy Cunniffe

Stumbling aroung the web in yet another fruitless attempt to find out what happened to my Henry Butson after he married Mary Wilson in 1868 and was living in Verulam Twp. (Victoria County) in the 1871 Census, I came upon this link: http://www.tbaytel.net/bmartin/quinte.htm

It includes a reference to an Ensign Butson in 1776-1777. This was a surprise to me. He may be the earliest Butson in Canada -- certainly well ahead of my Solomon & Jane & family who came in the early 1840's.

Does anyone have information on Vickles Butson - son of Solomon and and Jane? He was born in 1837 in St. Blazey, Cornwall, England. Married a Mary Mallin in 1861 in East Whitby. No record found of him after that. Could this be a misspelling of Nicholas? I have a record of Vickles being born in 1837 from a parish transcript of St. Blazey. HELP

hello, I am also a butson

Hi David,

Just wanted to let you know that the info you have on Nellie Butson (our Aunt) needs to be changed. She is alive and living in a nursing home in Rodney, Ontario outside of London. See above for her full name. Noticed that you have not had time to update lately - wondering what info you could use or would want for your site. If you want what I have researched, just send me your mailing address - via Stephanie's email - and I will send you the info I have collected on the Butson's and the McGirr's. Hoping to hear from you soon - Karen
