OUR FIRST DOWN-UNDER ISSUE

After two issues focusing on Canada and one on England, this is our first to focus on Australia and New Zealand. Material for this issue was provided by Mrs. Ruth E. Barber (Alfred Cove, W. Aus.), Mrs. Margaret A. Richards (Seacombe Heights, S. Aus.), Robert H. G. Butson (Murrumbeena, Victoria), and Thomas Butson (Brooklyn, New York). Mrs. Barber and Richards submitted theirs separately, and it turns out they are second cousins, descendants of two brothers who had lost contact with each other. Any additions or corrections to these charts are most welcome. Next Issue: Canadian charts

AUSTRALIA and NEW ZEALAND BUTSONS

Three families are known to have emigrated to Australia:

  1. John and wife, from St. Agnes, Cornwall, c. 1854-5 to Caroline St. Moonta, South Australia

  3. Samuel, from Newquay, Cornwall, c. 1850 to Australia and later New Zealand

In the following:

DISTRIBUTION OF BUTSONS IN GREAT BRITAIN

The August 1978 version of the LDS (Latter Day Saints) Computer File Index of many parish registers of Great Britain contained the following distribution of BUTSONs (including variants). The search, conducted at the Society of Genealogists in London, included all counties of England (except Surrey), as well as the Channel Islands, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The CFI continues to have more parish registers added. Thus these partial figures will change as the CFI grows. Note that the bulk of the references for Yorkshire and Durham were after 1800, indicating a probable recent migration.

Here is the listing by County, showing the number of BUTSONs (or variants) found and the range of years the records cover. The earliest and latest years are underscored.

  1. 210* Cornwall 1651-1870 (* Taken from Oct 1976 CFI)
  2. Many* Devon * (* Devon not counted due to time limits on research)
  3. 71 - Yorkshire 1770-1857
  4. 18 - Durham 1798-1838
  5. 11 - London 1664-1856
  6. 7 - Somerset 1679-1855
  7. 6 - Shropshire 1813-1862
  8. 5 - Gloucester 1689-1850
  9. 4 - Stafford 1828-1857
  10. 3 - Lancashire 1724-1856
  11. 2 - Lincoln 1597-1837
  12. 2 - Suffolk 1683-1844
  13. 2 - Westmoreland 1761-1770
  14. 1 - Bucks 1681-1681
  15. 1 - Northumberland (1690-1690)
  16. 1 - Norfolk 1802-1802
  17. 0 - All Others, including Channel Islands, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland

Please note the following regarding e-mail.
  1. This really is a low priority for me right now. So I may take quite a while to answer your e-mail. But someday, I will get around to it.
  2. I am NOT planning to publish another issue. If you are interested in taking over the work of the newsletter, please click here and let me know.
  3. Please include "Butson" in the subject of your note, since I am receiving e-mail on several different subjects, and this will help me to sort things out.
  4. Once you have read all of the above, please send comments to WWJohnston@aol.com.
