After two issues focusing on Canada and one on England, this is our first to focus on Australia and New Zealand. Material for this issue was provided by Mrs. Ruth E. Barber (Alfred Cove, W. Aus.), Mrs. Margaret A. Richards (Seacombe Heights, S. Aus.), Robert H. G. Butson (Murrumbeena, Victoria), and Thomas Butson (Brooklyn, New York). Mrs. Barber and Richards submitted theirs separately, and it turns out they are second cousins, descendants of two brothers who had lost contact with each other. The August 1978 version of the LDS (Latter Day Saints) Computer File Index of many parish registers of Great Britain contained the following distribution of BUTSONs (including variants). The search, conducted at the Society of Genealogists in London, included all counties of England (except Surrey), as well as the Channel Islands, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The CFI continues to have more parish registers added. Thus these partial figures will change as the CFI grows. Note that the bulk of the references for Yorkshire and Durham were after 1800, indicating a probable recent migration.
